How Big is Big?

Kaj Siebert

You know that feeling when you hear a massive measurement, and your imagination just can’t quite build a picture of it? That’s me. I can handle someone being a head taller, but the moment you tell me , or that , it all goes a bit fuzzy. I can tell it’s big, but I can’t really visualize it.

But if you tell me the small wheels are 10m and ATLAS 25m, or that PS is 628 metres compared to LHC’s 27km, well I can tell it’s big, but I can’t really visualise it.

I see the outline on a map, stretching from Meyrin to Cessy in Switzerland, but what does that feel like? Is that my entire commute to work? A quick trip to the shops? Would it even fit in my city?

It’s one thing to know something is huge; it’s another to truly grasp it. So, what if you could just pick up these colossal accelerators and plop them down anywhere in the world?

Well, using the map overlay component I wrote for the last post, we can stop wondering and start exploring. Let’s find out!
